TARGET AUDIENCE - This course is for all members of the family or crew, including those new to boating. Applies to a wide range of vessels including yachts, launches, powerboats, jet skis, sea kayaks, wakaand marina operators.
Course Aim - To provide course participants with the skills and knowledge required to minimising the risks of fire and explosion on a small craft, and suppress small firesonboard their vessel until advanced aid arrivesregardless of where these craft are used i.e. Inland waterways, Coastal waters or the open sea.
NZQA – This course is a practical based programme that uses predominantly hands on adult learning techniques to meet identified learning outcomes of the following unit standards:

PREREQUISITES – The expected duration to complete this face to face course is 3 -4 hours+ precourse assignment.
COURSE FEES – This service is delivered on a Flat Fee for this servicebasis, for up to 24 participants. A travel and accommodationsurcharge will apply for bookings outside of Hawke’s Bay.
Competencies to be achieved during the training – Delegates successfully completing the course will have gained knowledgeand practicalexperience in being able to:
- Identify the fuel hazards involved and the fire prevention precautions to be taken on a small boat/PWC/marina
- Identifyclass of fire, appropriate equipment, extinguishing agent and method of attack
- Identify the necessary safety equipment installed and know how to use it in an emergency
- Safely isolate electrical, fuel and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) installations
- Raise the alarmand initiate first aid actions on discovery of a fire
- Restrict, contain and extinguish a fire onboard a small boat, PWC or marina
- Muster crew to account for all personnel, and if unable to control fire, prepare to abandon the vessel
- Suppress a number of live fires using our live fire simulator on a a small boat/PWC/marina using hand extinguishers
ASSESMENT – Progressive theory and practical assessments throughout the course, based on the NZQA/EMQUAL assessment criteria of each unit standard, including oral questions relating to underpinning knowledge and practical resuscitation, first aidand fire fighting skillsina range of simulated emergency situations using our marine and shore based live fire simulators.
CERTIFICATION – Participants who are deemed competent against the NZQA assessment criteria of each unit standard, will receive a Small Boat Fire Safety certificate which is valid for 2 years, and be credited with the above unit standards on their NZQA Record of Achievement to validate that they have received structured First Aid and Fire Safety training in accordance with the New Zealand Resuscitation Council and Department of Labour Guidelines.
