BREATHING APPARATUS TRAINING / REFRESHER
TARGET AUDIENCE – This course is designed for personnel in all workplaces who are required to wear or use Breathing Apparatus, as respiratory protection in spaces that are IDLH (Immediatley Dangerous to Life and Health) as a result of low oxygen levels, smoke or contamination by chemicals
AIM – To provide participants with the confidence, knowledge and skills to properly shut down processes, respond to fires and perform searches, snatch rescues and evacuations in irrespirable atmospheres prior to the arrival of the New Zealand Fire Service.
NZQA – This course is a practical based programme that uses predominantly hands on adult learning techniques to meet identified learning outcomes of the following unit standards:

PREREQUISITES – Candidates must be medically fit and have no fear of confined spaces and limited facial growth i.e. trimmed moustaches only (no beards) as per AS - 1715 - 1994.The expected duration to complete this face to face course is 16 hours+ precourse assignment.
COURSE FEES – This service is delivered on a Flat Fee for this servicebasis, $2000 + GST per course, for up to a maximum of 8 staff at your site. Price $250 - $420 per person (Cost per course according to numbers attending 8 x students = $250 each, 6 x students = $334each, 4 students = $500 each) run at your workplace. This fee covers the cost of professional planning, tuition, assessment, use of equipment, certificates and reporting of credits to NZQA. A travel and accommodation surcharge will apply for bookings outside of Hawke’s Bay.
CONTENT – This ‘Hands-On” practical course provides the participant with the necessary skills and knowledge required to operate and maintain the self-contained breathing apparatus equipment in irrespirable atmospheres.
PRACTIAL EXERCISES – Finally we tie all the theory into a practice by allowing students to take part in a number of practical scenarios which include CPR and appropriate conduct of pre-donning tests, correct donning of breathing apparatus, operation and movement in poor conditions or reduced visibility, breathing apparatus emergency procedures, correct removal of breathing apparatus gear, etc.This provides participantswith an opportunity to practice duties, test procedures and experience PPE utilised at their place of employment.
ASSESSMENT – Progressive theory and practical assessments throughout the course, based on the NZQA assessment criteria of each unit standard, including oral questions relating to underpinning knowledge and practical breathing apparatus operator skills ina range of simulated emergency situations.
CERTIFICATION – Participants who are deemed competent will receive a Breathing Apparatus Operators certificateand be credited with the above unit standards to validate that they have received structured Breathing Apparatus training in accordance with AS 1715:1994, ASNZ 2865:2001and the procedures on safety and operation set down by the host employer pursuant to the requirements of the Health & Safety in Employment Act and associated guidelines.
